Pain relief while getting dental work?

Question by Am: Pain relief while getting dental work?
I have had numerous bad experiences with dentists. I had a tooth pulled and it wasnt numb, the dentist told me that he could not give me any more oral sedation and that I couldnt possibly feel it. Well, I screamed it was horrible. Basically I have come to the assumption that I will have to have IV sedation for everything on that side of my mouth. Apparently my nervous system isnt were its supposed to be, but only on the right side of my mouth.
Anyways, is there any alternative to IV sedation? And, is there a limit on how many procedures you can have done all at once?
I am thinking, if I pay for IV sedation, I want it all done.
Thanks for serious replies.

Answer by Alobar
You can be put under, but there is the ever-present danger of death then. Something to investigate is finding a dentist that uses nitrous oxide. It puts you in a dream-like state where you are kind of outside of your physical experience–why the hippies like it recreationally–so while you are still feeling pain, you don’t really care.

Q&A: Insufflating (snorting) Oxycontin for pain, will blood tests be identical to swallowing the Oxycontin tablets?

Question by rudeboy311: Insufflating (snorting) Oxycontin for pain, will blood tests be identical to swallowing the Oxycontin tablets?
Hello everybody,

Sorry, this is the second time I’ve posted this question. I said the question was “resolved”, and I think it may be, but on second thoughts I really would be more reassured with the advice of a qualified physician/doctor, or anyone who can give me an authoritative yes/no answer.

My female friend takes 20mg oxycontin twice daily for chronic pain relief (I said 30mg last time, found out it’s actually 20mg). She has heard that insufflation (crushing the pill and snorting) may provide better analgesia than oral consumption.

I realize there may be significant health risks associated with insufflation, and so does she, but she has heard insufflation may help her pain better, and I think she is determined to experiment.

Every so often her doctor takes a blood test to make sure the right amount of oxycontin is in her system, to check she hasn’t been taking too much, or even too little (and then selling it etc.).

My question is, if she insufflates 20mg twice daily, will it show up in her bloodstream the same as if she took the tablets orally?

She’s never been a recreational drug user, just seeking pain relief, but her doctor is not keen to increase her dose.

I am scared she will have her oxycontin taken away altogether if the blood test results are inconsistent. She is in enough pain as it is, it would be tragic if her painkillers were taken away completely. I will do everything in my power to suggest she seeks alternative pain relief, but if she insists on insufflation, I need to know that her blood results will at least remain consistent.

Also, is it always the case that X amount of oral Oxycontin shows up the same in the blood stream as X amount of Oxycontin insufflated? For example, for somebody who took 80mg Oxycontin twice a day, if they decided to crush and snort their 80mg pills twice a day, would it show the same in the blood as 80mg taken orally twice a day?

This stupidly long post is basically asking, if Oxycontin is snorted twice a day, will it show in the bloodstream exactly the same as the same amount of Oxycontin taken orally and swallowed twice a day?

Thanks for any information, really appreciate any advice.

Thank you.

Answer by Heather-Marie
Either way it will show up the same. Her body is still receiving the exact same medication, whether it’s orally, or nasally. It is not changing the chemical composition in any way. If she is determined to snort one though, tell her to rinse her nose with saline afterwards – otherwise she risks her nose being eaten from the inside out… just like with cocaine.

Snorting the pill will not really help her out much though. All it will do is allow the medication to kick in faster, but it will not last nearly as long. Perhaps she could do a 50/50 split? Snort 1/2 of the pill, and take the other half orally. That way she would receive the pain relief benefits faster, but it would also be in her system longer.

Pain Relief for Arthritis and lameness in horses?

Question by Rodeo Chick: Pain Relief for Arthritis and lameness in horses?
My little horse is 15 years old next month and has been lame (but working) for some time now. The vet can do nothing he is in need of good Chiropractor but we can’t find one.

He was working really well until last week and he took a backwards step. We ave tried everything for him, you name it we have tried it.

We can’t retire him, hes too intelligent and will get board very easily.

So were looking at alternatives, possibly using pain relief permanently, like bute (which I know is not good in the long run)

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem and what they have tried.

He is happy and healthy in himself – lame behind, high up in the hind quarters in the sacroiliac joint from an old bang rolling in a stable a few years back. To add to it, he has bog spavin’s in both hocks and minor arthritis.

Answer by Anna S
When you say you have tried everything, what have you tried? Just some suggestions, have you been giving him supplements like Flex Free or Condra Flex? Have you tried giving him Legend injections? Or having his hocks injected? There are tons of options that may give him some relief, of course some are more expensive than others and not just any vet can do the procedures or knows about them. There is a new procedure call I Wraps, that uses the blood plasma from your horse to help heal bad joints and other issues. Daily bute should be used as a last resort as it is hard on their stomachs and can cause ulcers. There are other pain medicines that are less caustic, can’t think of the names at this moment. If you feel your vet is not giving you all the options available, then ask around. Lameness issues in horses has had so much progress in treatments lately, that it is probably in your horses best interest to be seen by someone who specializes in these issus.

In the twilight of one’s life.

A few nice alternative pain relief images I found:

In the twilight of one’s life.
alternative pain relief

in 1984 I took these pictures to accompany a magazine article about dying in a hospice.

I was very moved by the people I met, both staff and residents.

It was a very enlightening experience and went some way towards providing me with a more stable and complete reference with which to work when it comes to my own mortality.

I don’t remember the names of these people, neither the living nor the dead; but I offer these pictures in honour of both.

A Hospice is a place that people with terminal illnesses go to be cared for until their death.

From Wikipedia: Hospice, program of humane and supportive care for the terminally ill and their families; the term also applies to a professional facility that provides care to dying patients who can no longer be cared for at home. Hospice is an alternative to hospitalization that emphasizes home care for as long as possible; relief from pain; an attractive, noninstitutional environment if the patient can no longer be cared for at home; and personal and family counseling. The hospice movement was pioneered by Dr. Cicely Saunders, founder of St. Christopher’s Hospice (opened 1967), London, and furthered by Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s work with the dying.

The Hospice in my pictures is the Marie Curie Hospice, Hampstead

I am including this image in an exhibition that starts next week, so I have done a little work on it. Hope you still like it though.

Q&A: Other than epidural, what pain relief medication is available during labor/delivery?

Question by Gina: Other than epidural, what pain relief medication is available during labor/delivery?
Obviously, I will ask my doctor this question at my next appointment, but I am curious to hear of other alternatives used, and any personal experiences anyone has had with them.
I do want some sort of pain killer, so breathing/relaxation techniques or a water birth are not exactly what I’m looking for. A needle into my spine is also not appealing to me. I’m just wondering if there are any pain medications that can be given either by IV or orally during labor and delivery?

Answer by Soph -Isabella Kate is here!-
The gas (i used this, and it works, you just have to keep rememebering to suck on it, cos it takes 20 seconds for it to kick in, and it doesnt last long, so you have to keep doing it through your contraction)
Pethadine ( i also used this, and it really relaxes you ALOT)
The T.E.N.S machine ( is just a machine you have these stickers you stick on your back and it vibrates, didnt use this, but we tried it in our pre natel classes, it looked alright, i dont think i liked it though)
Sterile water (needle in your back, only lasts around 90 minutes)

whaaat???? what do you mean you have never heard of the gas when you are giving birth?? it doesnt knock you out, what are you talking about

you guys should really google it, because its one of the most commen pain relief methods.. here is a little somthing i found on the internet..

What is gas and how does it work?

‘Gas’ refers to forms of breathable, light anaesthetics that can be used for pain relief during the labour and sometimes for giving birth. Gas can also be used occasionally by the woman, for certain medical interventions that may require a level of pain relief.

Nitrous oxide (also known as ‘laughing gas’) is currently the most commonly used gas for pain relief in labour. It is a colourless, odourless gas, that when diluted (usually by half or 50%) with oxygen, provides a level of pain relief. In higher levels (usually up to 78%) it can be used as part of a general anaesthetic.
